Blake had a really rough time after his vaccines...a very different reaction from his previous vaccines! So, this morning when we took his jammies off and noticed he wasn't moving his left leg we knew there was something wrong. His right thigh measured 9 inches around and his left was measuring 9.5 inches...plus his left thigh was hot, skin was taut, and he didn't suck on his most favorite toes. He was still pretty fussy and winced when we touched or moved his left leg.
We called the on-call pediatric hematologist & she decided we needed to take Blake to the ER for evaluation. Our hearts broke as we knew what this meant...Blake probably had a muscle bleed and was going to need a treatment, AKA needle stick!
That hour long drive was tough...the reality of this disease was starting to sink in. My mind raced as we drove...
'Will this be the first of many ER visits?'
'Why does this little guy have hemophilia?'
'Will he cry? Will we cry?'
'Why didn't we hold pressure to his legs better yesterday after those shots?!'
'Why does he have to go through this?!'
At the ER...we got triaged and taken right back...the doctor had called ahead to let them know we were coming and needed to be seen ASAP, thank goodness! (that ER waiting room was packed with sickies waiting to share their germs with us...no THANKS!)
Blake was so good while we waited! He flirted with the staff and the other patients...everyone kept saying he was so cute. (DUH! We know that!!)
The nurse put the emla cream on & we waitied...
Blake sat on my lap while two nurses worked to start his iv on the first stick! YAY!! Poor kidlet was crying before the needle even came close...I think he knew what was coming!! (he's one smarty!) Once the nurse got blood return, she realized she needed another hand to coordinate the syringe connection...so dad came to the rescue!! Meanwhile, B was sooooo sad! That little face could not have been more sad...ugh...how can we do this on a regular basis?!?! (which will be the case once we start treating prophylactically)
Once the factor was in...he snuggled with Rustin until he calmed down. (Those two have the cutest, most sweet relationship!)
Before we left Blake was all smiles & on the road to recovery (and toe sucking!)
We hope he'll only need this one treatment to stop this muscle bleed. So in the mean time, we are taking advantage of his extra snuggles & keeping him happy!

OH NO!!!! I just found out!!! Are you guys still there???
Blake - you were so brave!!! Still happy amd smiling even though your leg hurt soooo much. We're so sad we couldn't have been there to snuggle you. We are praying that your leg feels better fast and you can suck on the cute little toes again soon.
