Change of Plans

Yesterday, Debbie called us wanting to look at B's picc line. We were planning on heading to the zoo in SF today, so we said we'd stop by the hemo clinic in Oakland.

Once here, Blake weighed 9.1 kg. They said, probably in a couple months he'll be big enough for a port. Then we mentioned the puffiness in Blake's right forearm and hand and the collateral veins above B's PICC. Both Jim and Debbie did not like what they saw and suspected a clot. (kinda ironic eh?! thr boy that needs help clotting may have a clot!) So across the street we went to radiology.

First Blake had a dye study in flouro. The PICC was patent but in his axilla, not central in the SVC (near his heart) anymore which was concerning indicating venous return in his vein may be hindered...thus causing the puffiness in his arm. The Flouro guy gave Blake a light-up toy! He loves it!

Next Blake had an ultrasound of his neck, chest and arm. Blake watched his baby Einstein on Rustin's phone during the procedure and held really still.

During the ultrasound, Debbie came to tell us Blake was being admitted. Not sure exactly what for...a TPA infusion (clot buster) was mentioned as well as a new central line.

Next thing we know, we are making room 5330 our new home for the next day or two.

Both tests could confirm a clot, but to be on the safe side, the PICC is coming out and a Broviac line is going in. Blake is on the surgery schedule for tomorrow early afternoon.

So, we never made it to the zoo...instead we get to hang with the most amazing hematologist and hemo/onc nurses at Oakland Children's.
