Really, they usually aren't this bad...thanks to Baby Einstein. I think what makes Blake the saddest is being strapped down - can ya blame him, poor peanut!
Blake's dressing changes are usually once a week, but lately it's been a little more frequent because he's been pulling and itching at the site. Our routine begins with covering up the site and dressing with a large tegaderm - a clear waterproof-ish dressing - so he can take a bath.
(If I have one complaint about this Broviac central line it is that he can't take baths regularly because there's such a great risk of infection. And Mr. Blake LOVES baths! Then to think this summer he won't be able to go swimming...sigh. On the other hand however, because of this central Blake is virtually bruise free!!)
Blake likes to help fill up his tub...we still use his inflatable one since it's easier to keep him seated and his dressing mostly dry. Blake loves to splash, play with his foam letters, and fill up and dump out his little bucket. He's also discovered the rubber ducky squirts water if he squeezes it hard enough!
We try to let him stay in as long as possible and usually have to refill the tub at least once because he's splashed most of the water out or it's too cold. Once his toes are pruney, we scoop him out and dry him off!
Then on to the dressing change.
Rustin usually has everything set out and a Baby Einstein moved queued up.
We strap him down and quickly get to work.
First the old dressing is removed.
Second, clean with a chloraprep wand.
Third, clean with a second cloraprep wand to make sure no bugs are left behind.
(kinda overkill...but I'm a germ freak with this line!)
Fourth, let it dry before applying the skin prep,
which acts as a barrier between B's skin and adhesive dressing.
Fifth, let that dry really good before applying the dressing.
Then we are done and Blake is FREE!
Only a few tears shed.
Blake sure is one tough little guy.
