Emergency

It was 6:25pm on February 2nd, trying to wrap up my shift and prepare to give report, when the unit clerk says, "Lisa it's Rustin and he says it's an emergency."

My heart sunk and I picked up the phone.

Rustin proceeds to tell me that Blake's broviac line tubing burst while flushing it and he can't give him his factor, and he was bleeding from the line. Ok...uh uh uh?!?! What do we do?!? So I tell him to figure out a way to clamp the tubing and get to the ER. The only problem is, I have our only car with our only carseat!

So as I am scurrying to wrap up my charting...Rustin calls our good friend Nate to give them a ride to me at the hospital. THANKS NATE & SARAH!!

I clocked out and ran downstairs to meet them in the ER. It sure pays to know people...the ER waiting room was jam packed, but we got right it. We got settled and I took Blake's shirt off to see the damage. Rustin had brilliantly clamped the tube with a binder clip. Blake had not a care in the world, until we laid him on the gurney to start an IV for his factor.

Rustin is such a good dad...he explained everything to Blake. Blake still wasn't impressed.

The IV took two pokes, but Blake was so brave.
Our nurse secured the broviac with a hemastat clamp and we waited for the ambulance to take us to Children's.
Blake & Rustin walked around outside watching another ambulance.
Then our ride showed up and we were on our way! With Rustin following behind.

The first half of the ride to Oakland Blake said cars, "kites" for lights, and fast over & over again.
The second half he snoozed with McQueen.

At Oakland's ER we got Anna, the best nurse! She said Blake's tubing could be changed really easy.
So Blake and I waited for the doctor to see him and for daddy to get there.
As we waited we walked the hallways...a few cribs lined the hall and whenever Blake saw them
he'd say, "Nigh Night!" and run over to them. Poor kid was soooo tired!
One room we walked by Blake, stopped at the door so excited shouting, "Fooball! Fooball!!" When I looked inside, sure enough there was a basketball blaring on the TV.

After deciding against admitting us (YAY!!) we were moved to the procedure room...by now it was at least 12:30am.

Here is where Anna changed Blake's tubing. Poor Blake was so exhausted that his little cry when
we strapped him down was so pitiful.

Thank goodness for the basketball on the tv and that little green car!
During the change, Blake giggled hysterically as drove that little green car up his arm and into his mouth. Gross...yes, but sooooo helpful!

After, Blake & Rustin snuggled.
Look at that tired face!

We were discharged and home at 3:30am this morning!

So glad we were blessed to a ex-oncology nurse as our ER nurse...she knew exactly what to do and how to fix our little man!

You guys are just amazing. I hope that things continue to go well, and that there aren't too many emergencies in the future. But you both handle the situations so well, not to mention document it too! You are just amazing...
