Oakland...Again...

Our Thursday started out like normal...Rustin got up with Blake while they let me catch some more zzz's. Blake ate breakfast, played his usual basketball, and had his bath.
(He's LOVIN his "A-Ceeee's!" (how he says ABC's))

This morning though, Blake was running around with his shirt off and we noticed Blake's veins on his right arm and chest were a lot more prominent. So we sent a pic to our super hemo team at Oakland Children's.

With in minutes we had an email and phone call back saying Dr. M wanted Blake to be admitted to check for a new clot. We were told to not let Blake eat or drink anything in case they had to do anything.

So...we scurried to pack our bags and get to Oakland.

Once at Children's, Blake was admitted to 5 South...the immunocompromised unit - AKA sick sick kids with cancer. (Little kids should NOT get cancer! Ugh...breaks your heart to see! One mom said to me as she watched Blake play with her 2 year old with no hair from chemo, "Gosh...I miss Brody's hair." Seriously...what do you say to that!  Broke my heart!!)

We tried to keep Blake busy & not thinking about food or water...since half the ride down he cried for a drink! Our room was right over the hospital entrance...so we watched as daddy ran to the car! Blake LOVED watching the BART train speed by and shooting hoops .

Once Dr. M decided the best test to check for a clot was an ultrasound...
Blake was cleared to eat! And eat he did!!

It was well into the evening before we went to radiology.
Blake did NOT want anything to do with the ultrasound or the technician. Anytime the tech got near his portacath he was squirm and scream...poor kid. He would say, "Poke! Poke!??!" And we kept saying, "No pokes! No pokes!" Rustin ended up laying next to him on the table to keep him still, while I held up my phone playing Cars.

After the ultrasound, the radiologist, Dr. Martin, came to talk to us about what he saw.
He assured us there was no new blood clot - YAY! - and went on to describe the occluded subclavian vein from before and how it is scarred. He described the tangled web of collateral veins Blake's body developed to compensate for the occlusion and how we will always see those superficial veins, especially as he's more active and growing. Since there was no clinical signs of a clot - swelling or pain - he didn't see any need for intervention.

So, back to our room to spend the night.

The next morning we played basketball, cooked, checked daddy's O2 sat, checked Blake's blood pressure, watched out our window at the cars drive by & took our traditional hospital pic with Blake's stats on his bed while we waited for discharge paperwork.

Then we spent the rest of the morning at Ikea.
Blake was tired & done shopping soon into our excursion.  He slept the whole way home!

That evening Blake helped me run errands. (Pans are always on hand...you never know when you may need to whip something up!)
